NEWEST ADDITION TO PACK EXPO INTERNATIONAL: "PACK EXPO Selects".
The Packaging Machinery Manufacturers Institute (PMMI) has chosen 15 new and innovative commercial packaging projects as finalists in its inaugural PACK EXPO Selects program, a new, interactive feature of the PACK EXPO International show.
The PACK EXPO Selects program is a featured display and electronic voting program that will allow packaging professionals attending PACK EXPO to recognize innovative packaging designs, structures and processes by voting for their favorite PACK EXPO Selects packaging project. All packages in the PACK EXPO Selects program were developed, produced or executed by exhibitors at PACK EXPO International. Results of the packaging professionals' preferences will be released each day in the Show Daily, with a final tally announced shortly after the conclusion of the show.
The PACK EXPO Selects awards program is the newest addition to The Showcase of Packaging Innovations, a popular special PACK EXPO show pavilion, sponsored by The Dow Chemical Company.
PACK EXPO Selects
PACK EXPO Selects voting will be open throughout the entire five-day show, which runs from Sunday, October 29 - Thursday, November 2, 2006 at Chicago's McCormick Place. Attendees will be able to cast votes via their My PACK EXPO portal, which will be accessible from Product Locator Kiosks located throughout the convention center.
"This the only industry awards program that recognizes the contributions made by packaging materials, machinery and service providers, ," comments Charles D. Yuska, president of PMMI. "It presents an ideal opportunity for peer recognition while also recognizing the key role partnerships play in seeing a package concept through to fruition."
Each nominated package has been developed, designed, converted or produced by one or more PACK EXPO International 2006 exhibitors. In the PACK EXPO Selects display, each package will have an adjacent placard recognizing all participating companies and providing a brief description of the packaging project
The following packages have been selected for the inaugural PACK EXPO Selects awards program:
Description: When designing the package for Beneful Prepared Meals there were several key goals: create a distinctive package that would appeal to pet owners, incorporate the barriers needed for extended shelf stability, provide the ruggedness and performance needed to withstand the high temperatures and pressure of the retort process and use a crystal clear material for the primary serving bowl. The resulting package is thermoformed of a proprietary, clear, seven-layer polypropylene/ethylene vinyl alcohol coextrusion designed to achieve specific barrier and performance requirements. The innerseal locks out air and other harmful elements to protect nutrients while the container's full body, heat-shrinkable sleeve label includes product-viewing windows on three panels to clearly show the food's chunky, natural ingredients and reinforce its quality and wholesome appeal. If contents are left over, consumers can easily snap on the lid to reseal the container and refrigerate for future use. |

Description: The BENJAMIN is an automatic form-fill-seal system suitable for medium capacity filling of powder products into plastic bags. Offering dust-free filling and a securely sealed plastic bag, product cleanliness and moisture protection is ensured and storage life is increased. Products are highly compacted, ensuring optimum use of storage and freight capacity and provides maximum pallet stability. Integrated corner welding further enhances the box shape of the bags. |

Description: This stylish, functional carrier uniquely positions three glass bottles ensuring no glass-to-glass contact and providing excellent protection. Constructed from .018 Coated Natural Kraft Carrier Kote with aqueous gloss coating, the BottleMaster® carrier offers an ideal vehicle for promotions and new product launches. |

Description: Kan-Pak has launched its Cool Java brand ready-to-drink Iced Cappuccino products in three delicious flavors - Mocha, French Vanilla and Dark Roast - all in shelf-stable, consumer-friendly, clear plastic bottles. Designed to protect beverages from oxygen, the bottles stand up to the rigorous retort sterilization process without the internal panels or ribs found in other retort bottles and keep contents shelf-stable at ambient conditions. Produced using a value-added multi-layer process, the bottle's curved structure eliminates wrinkled shrink sleeve labels while its induction seal closure is easy to open and reclose. The dynamic, full-wrap labels, color-coded by flavor, make it easy for the consumer to select a favorite flavor. |

Description: Designed to replace a conventional cooler, this unique carton offers consumers a "chimney" addition that allows the container to nearly double its height once opened, creating plenty of room for ice. Created for Tecate in Mexico, the carton is constructed from .018 Coated Natural Kraft Carrier Kote with aqueous gloss coating. Event-based market research showed that consumers preferred the Duodozen Ice-Pack design for outdoor-oriented events like backyard parties, fishing trips, sporting events and other venues where portability and disposability are needed. |

Description: Designed to offer customers an exciting new look that is both practical and ergonomic, each Kleenex tissue cup measures 7 x 17 centimeters and holds 50 tissues. Several combinations of raw materials and dimensions were evaluated until a low-cost structure was found that performs on the production line and meets customer requirements at the same time. The team also developed the thermoformed top end with an opening in the center that gives the consumers easy access to the tissues. In addition, the six-color offset label in blue, gray, black, orange, red and green makes the cup stand out on store shelves. |

Description: "Wrap around" graphics are integral to a marketing plan due to the tight registration of graphic images required across sealed flaps of traditional folding cartons. Canisters avoid this problem with use of continuous graphic display. Structural uniqueness is achieved by pressure fitting a composite lid under the folded top edge of the container. The center paperboard piece is removed by the consumer to facilitate access to the tissues. The injection molded frame remains, adding structural strength to the overall container. |

Description: To launch Meow Mix's Market Select wet cat food, manufacturers developed a package that offered a new level of convenience by allowing contents to be easily opened and dispensed. The cup is a custom thermoformed rigid container utilizing a proprietary high barrier multi-layer structure with design characteristics specifically implemented for retort processing performance. The multi-layer, high barrier foil based peelable retort lid showcases graphics without wrinkles or distortion. A specially designed flange thickness and critical seal surface allow the package to be hermetically sealed. It features a specially formulated orange pearlescent color and a brand specific embossed surface detail. The container has been designed to physically withstand the high temperature and pressure it undergoes in the retort process. |
|
Description: To meet consumer demand for convenient ways to eat and live healthier, without giving up great taste, Unilever Foods North America introduced Lipton powdered tea products in single-serve stick packets for on-the-go consumption. Consumers simply tear open the pouch, add the contents to bottled water, shake and drink. The mini packets are formed from a polyester/foil/polyester laminate supplied as rollstock. The structure is reverse-printed in seven colors by offset lithography. |

Description: In response to a growing health food market, Readifoods generated a single-wrap rigid container with the barrier properties of a composite can for the company's new fruit and nut snack mixes, Tesco Temptations. Designed to be portable and durable, the small (80-gram capacity) oval-shaped canister features a clear, heat-sealed, anti-mist membrane to ensure a long shelf life while its opaque cap keeps product fresh but also allows for easy opening. The label is printed using six-color lithography with a varnish. Tesco Temptations, available at Tesco retail locations throughout the U.K., are sold in the following mixes: Blueberry Yogurt Flavored & Yogurt Coated Raisins with Cranberries; Mixed Fruit, Nuts & Seeds; Cranberry, Raisins & Macadamia Nut Mix; and Orchard Fruit & Nut Mix. |

Description: With the increase in popularity of club and warehouse stores, displayable corrugated shipping containers have become a must for any brand owner selling into this marketplace. To be successful, these containers must meet very specific requirements including high top to bottom stacking strength, maximum rigidity to accommodate large product sizes, high product visibility, a smooth surface for optimum printability and an open design for maximum shop-ability. The T-Fort Bliss Box address all of these requirements, creating containers ideal for beverages, detergents and household chemicals in large sizes and/or counts. |

Description: Designed to protect wine's purity, flavor and bouquet, the Vino-Seal glass stopper sealing system has an upscale design (similar to a traditional crystal decanter) and is an elegant alternative to traditional cork. Vino-Seal combines the glass stopper with an inert o-ring to provide a hermetic seal. The patented design prevents oxidation and contaminates from entering the bottle, while retaining desirable free sulfur levels. In addition, no corkscrew is needed for opening the bottle and the wine can be resealed with the closure. |

|
Description: To help Wasatch IceWater Company bring its 20,000-year-old artesian water to market, developed a 16-ounce (473ml) stand-up flexible pouch. The proprietary pouch film structure combines PET, biaxially oriented nylon with a coextruded organoleptic inner sealant layer to protect taste, odor, color of water and pouch integrity. Another key element is the SmartSpout pouch dispensing system, which combines three components from Seaquist Closures - PE base fitment with silicone-valve-equipped spout topped off by EZ Turn Cap. The cap's enlarged, ergonomic design makes it easy to grasp, turn and access the liquid. The patented system dispenses two ways - by sipping or squeezing the flexible pouch to force liquid through the spout. The package's valve prevents pouch from spilling, leaking or dripping if tipped and keeps out air and other contaminants. |
